She Stood In Front Of Her Wardrobe... (Story 1: A NEW BEGINNING)

She stood in front of her wardrobe. Clad in a green silk saree, with a golden chain adorning her neck, she looked nothing less than a diva. Her hair flowed casually over her shoulders and that dark mascara and fuchsia lipstick blended perfectly with the glow of the newfound confidence on her face. It was the day she had always waited for…her convocation. Five and half years of hard work have paid off, and she was finally about to prefix a ‘Dr.’ before her name. She fished through her locker, for her last, and most precious ornament to complete her look.

At a very tender age of five years, she had lost her mother. Since then, her father had been her world. Being an Army official, he used to be busy, for most of the times, but he had always made sure that his daughter stayed happy. Amidst everything, he always had found out the time to help her with her homework, to paint her favourite Disney princess with her, to bake her favourite cookies or to take her out for shopping. Her life had been unimaginable without her father, and today, the very thought of her father not able to be with her on this special day of hers made her miss him more.

"You won't come, papa?? Its my convocation....", she had pleaded.

"I can't beta. I am at Siachen. Its a huge responsibility."

"But...."

"Beta, nothing is more important than your Motherland, isn't it??"

"I'll be all alone, papa. Everyone will have their parents by their side. And me.....papa, I don't feel like attending..."

"You are not alone, my child. I have sent you a gift, a very precious ornament, that you will cherish for the rest of your life. And with it, I have sent you my blessings. No matter wherever you go, my child, you will always have me by your side..."

"Ornament???..... papa!! diamonds???", she had cried out in a childlike glee.

Her father laughed, before he began.

"You'll get to see it soon my child..."

"Esha!! Are you ready?? Let's go...its almost time.."

Her roommate's voice broke her chain of thoughts.

"Yes, coming...", she replied.

She smiled, as she took out her Littman stethoscope from her locker that had arrived two days ago...her pride....her most precious ornament...and her father's blessings.

She glowed brighter and happier as she put it around her neck.

The auditorium was full of people. Excitement rippled from every nook and corner. While everyone was busy with families and siblings, Esha clicked a lot of selfies, alone. She would send them tonight to her Papa.

"No matter wherever you go, my child, you will always have me by your side..."

Her father's voice echoed in the perfume filled air and she could feel the vibrations amidst the hustling crowd. Goosebumps tickled her skin.

And then the ceremony began. People settled down. The moment that everyone had been waiting for, had finally arrived. Cameras flashed, as the fresh batch of doctors stood up to take the pious Hippocratic Oath.

Decked in her black graduation gown, the black graduation cap crowning her head, Esha stepped onto the dias with a smile to receive her final certificate.

She was just about to begin a new journey and she knew she was not alone...
